Introduction To Brickmould

Brickmould is a type of door & window trim. Traditionally, it was used on homes with brick exteriors, but today it can be utilized on homes with any type of exterior.

These days, the main distinction between brickmould and any other type of exterior trim is stylistic. Brickmould typically features a more decorative profile and will often have features like bevels, giving it a more sophisticated look than traditional exterior trim.

Functionally, brickmould serves the same purpose as exterior trim; it fills the gap between the doors and windows and the exterior wall. Choose brickmould if you’re looking for a more refined look for your home’s exterior!

Materials & Durability

Here at STAR, we offer two different types of brickmould: Primed pine brickmould and white PVC brickmould. We’ve chosen to procure brickmould built from these materials because they’re both excellent choices for Winnipeg’s harsh winters. PVC and primed pine are both exceptionally durable; PVC resists rot, insects, cold, heat, moisture, UV radiation, and more, and primed pine is painted, which helps it resist the elements.

We work with manufacturers like Ply Gem and Alexandria; titans in the mouldings & millwork industry that craft some of the most beautiful, durable brickmoulds available.

Choosing The Right Brickmould

There are several factors that go into choosing the right brickmould for your project. As with all construction supplies, form follows function; you’ll need to start by choosing a brickmould that fits in the gap you’re looking to fill. You should also keep in mind that brickmould is an exterior trim; you should almost never consider using it for interior design.

Both PVC and pine brickmould are sturdy enough to withstand Winnipeg’s climate, so the one you’ll choose depends on other factors. PVC brickmould tends to be lower maintenance, while pine brickmould is a great choice if you want a more traditional look. Both styles are highly customizable.

Installation Tips & Best Practices

As with any home improvement project, we always recommend having experience before attempting to install brickmould on your own. If you’ve never installed brickmould, work with someone who has so you can gain the experience for next time.

Surface preparation is key when installing brickmould; install it on a warm (not hot) day, preferably with little direct sunlight and no rain. Clean the area where the brickmould will be installed.

Secure the brickmould using exterior screws or nails. If your fasteners aren’t rated for the outdoors, your brickmould will fail. Use caulk to improve insulation and create a moisture barrier.

Maintaining brickmould is relatively straightforward: Simply clean your brickmould regularly with soap and water, and check it after severe weather for any damage. Primed pine must be painted, and you should repaint it every few years.
